Shanghai Daily + Survey = Telemarketing + SPAM
Whatever you do, do not fill out any survey from Shanghai Daily lest you want to have your phone number and email address disseminated to every expat-targeted marketing agency in the city.
Out of stupidity and boredom, I recently filled out their survey (with a chance to win free plane tickets or something, I forget) on the upcoming Shanghai World Expo, and I’ve been harassed ever since. I’ve received countless spam emails, SMS messages, and now unsolicited phone calls from the lowest-of-the-low expats from telemarketing agencies, wanting me to make stupid investments or sign up for ridiculous financial services.
Ridiculous services aside: who the hell comes to Shanghai to be a telemarketer? Go teach English you assholes.
The worst thing? The emails have no unsubscribe option, and I highly doubt that Shanghai has any Do Not Call registry. Shanghai Daily, YOU SUCK.
Namely because english speaking countries are ruined economically, namely UK and US. If you check jobsdb.com even somewhere like Hong Kong they have more jobs advertised for a city of 8 million than they do for the entire UK with a population of 62 million .
Many of those advertised jobs in the UK are either CV harvesting non existant jobs and or repeat adverts from various agencies .A brief look in Manchester has an accounts assistant job which has been doing the rounds for the past 2 months advertised at least 32 times by different recruiters.
Teaching english is not always an option , quite frankly racism still runs deep in Asia , indicative of this is the way that many job adverts ask for photos. You can read ESL boards all day about non white teachers not being able to get jobs all over Asia even though they are supremely qualified and experienced. Even the teachers who do get jobs are told to stay out of the sun.
In supposed civilised places like S Korea or Hong Kong there is little difference in that they still prefer appearances to that of ability. School owners often use the excuse that it is what parents want , which in effect reflects the racism that is inherent in society and school owners pander to the preferences of their customers, morals and ethics aside they going concerns and need to retain their customers.
If you don’t believe me you can visit some of the schools in Hong Kong yourself its only a short train ride away for 400RMB from Shanghai (and the food on that train is better than the Beijing train) and go visit some schools, I was surprised at the numbers of Russians teaching in Hong Kong for appearances sake many of whom took a very long time to string together a coherent sentence such that I spoke to them in Russian instead.
And really a job is a job , it might be unethical and annoying to you (even more annoying to people in Hong Kong who have to pay to receive telephone calls) but they are just doing a job to pay the bills.
