Someone has received a crash course in Arnie. She reluctantly watched classics such as Commando, Total Recall, Terminator (first one), Running Man, and Predator. Of minor note is Kindergarten Cop which was abandoned at the halfway mark because it really is that bad.

James Nachtwey, widely recognised as one of the world’s best war photographers has been covering international conflicts and social issues for some twenty odd years. He is an inspirational figure, not only because of his powerful compositions or time-proven dedication to his work, but the attitude with which he approaches both his subjects and audience. Nachtwey is a very humble man for someone of his notoriety and experience. Instead of an ego inflated by countless praises and publicity, or a sense of sarcastic cynicism that commonly accompanies experts who have come to know their subjects too well. Nachtwey remains a person of curiosity and modesty; a passionate photographer who is genuinely interested in exposing and giving voice to those affected by the atrocities of war, poverty in developing countries, civil strife and many other social issues that continue to be un- or under-reported. Because at the heart of the issues we perceive from our daily media, and the numerous grand policies passed down from on top, is how these issues and decisions will ultimately affect those on the ground level. As Nachtwey puts forth the questions that documentary photography attempts to answer:

“It puts a human face on issues which from a far can appear abstract or ideological and monumental in their global impact. What happens at ground level? Far from the wholes of power? What happens to ordinary citizens one by one?”
