Wang Lao Ji 王老吉 is the best drink in China and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. I first discovered this ‘cooling tea’ back in 2002 in Shenzhen where I spent most of my time hanging out in dingy, smoke-filled internet bars getting slaughtered by internet addicts, the unemployed and 10 year-olds playing Counter Strike for hours on end, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

It’s hard to describe the flavour – it’s very herbal, has a strong tea flavour and is slightly sweet. It may be a bit of an acquired taste, but it’s very refreshing in its own way.

Protip: This elixir of detoxification also seems to help with hangovers.
